Privacy Policy
Last updated: 26 March 2026
AvalancheClarity is a free app and website that provides AI-translated and explained Météo-France avalanche bulletins. Your privacy is important to us. This policy explains what information the app and website collect, how it is used, and what choices you have.
Information We Do Not Collect
AvalancheClarity does not:
- Require you to create an account or log in
- Collect your name, email address, phone number, or any other personal information
- Use personal analytics, crash reporting, or tracking tools (see Anonymous Usage Data below)
- Display advertising or share data with advertisers
- Sell or share your data with any third party
Push Notifications (Firebase Cloud Messaging)
If you enable push notifications in the app, the app subscribes to notification topics via Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) so you can be alerted when new avalanche bulletins are published for the massifs you follow.
This involves:
- A device token generated by Firebase to deliver notifications to your device
- The topic names of the massifs you subscribe to (e.g. "massif_03")
No personal information is sent to Firebase. The device token is managed by Google's Firebase service. See Firebase's Privacy Policy for details.
Location Data
The app may request access to your device's location to help you find which avalanche massif you are in. This is entirely optional — you can decline the permission and search for your location manually instead.
If granted, your location is used only on your device to determine which mountain range polygon you are inside. Your location is never sent to our servers or any third party.
Data Stored on Your Device
The app stores the following data locally on your device:
- Your language preference
- Which massifs you have subscribed to
- Notification settings
- Cached bulletin data for offline reading (automatically cleaned after 7 days)
- UI preferences (e.g. dismissed hint banners)
- A randomly generated anonymous identifier used to prevent duplicate language requests (see below)
This data stays on your device and is not transmitted to any server (except the anonymous identifier, which is sent only as part of language requests — see below). You can clear it at any time by clearing the app's data or uninstalling the app.
Network Requests
The app makes requests to avalancheclarity.com to download avalanche
bulletin content and send anonymous usage data. These requests contain:
- The bulletin identifier (a date-based reference code)
- Your language preference
- The app version number
No personal data, device identifiers, or location information is included in these requests. All communication uses HTTPS encryption.
Anonymous Usage Data
To help us understand which bulletins are most popular and which languages users would like us to add, the app sends fully anonymous usage data to our server:
- View counts: when you open a bulletin, a counter is incremented for that massif, language, and month. No personal or device information is sent — only the massif number, language code, and current month.
- Language requests: if you request a bulletin in a language that is not yet available, the app sends the massif number, requested language, and a one-way hash derived from a random anonymous identifier. This hash is used solely to prevent duplicate requests and cannot be reversed to identify you or your device.
This data is aggregate and anonymous. We do not store IP addresses, and there is no way to link any usage data back to an individual user. The random identifier stored on your device is never sent in plain text — only a cryptographic hash is transmitted.
Firebase Analytics
The app uses Firebase Analytics (Google) to collect anonymous usage data that helps us understand how the app is used and improve the service. This includes:
- App open events (when you launch the app)
- Which bulletins are viewed and in which language
- Which regions users subscribe to and unsubscribe from
- Screen navigation patterns
Firebase Analytics collects an anonymous app instance identifier to distinguish unique installations. This identifier is not linked to your identity and cannot be used to identify you personally. Firebase may also collect device metadata (device model, OS version, country derived from IP) in aggregate. IP addresses are not logged by Firebase Analytics.
You can opt out of Firebase Analytics by disabling analytics in your device settings or by uninstalling the app. See Firebase's Privacy Policy for details on how Google processes this data.
Third-Party Services
AvalancheClarity uses the following third-party services:
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google) — for delivering push notifications.
- Firebase Analytics (Google) — for anonymous usage analytics (see above).
See Firebase's Privacy Policy for details.
The website uses Vercel for hosting. See Vercel's Privacy Policy.
Data Security
All network communication is encrypted using HTTPS. We do not store any personal data on our servers — there are no user accounts and no databases of personal information. The only server-side data is anonymous aggregate counters (bulletin view counts and language request tallies) that cannot be linked to any individual user.
Children's Privacy
AvalancheClarity is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated date. Continued use of the app or website after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
